The brain gain does not speak Italian
Italy is one of the countries in the world with the lowest percentage of foreign university students. In 2007 it hosted only the 1.9% of all young people who have decided to go abroad for study. Compared to 20% in the U.S., 12% in the United Kingdom, 9% in Germany and 8% in France. The spoken language, the lack of English language courses and the lack of financial support are the key factors that hinder Italy. Nevertheless the figures for the last 10 years bodes well. Since the academic year 1999/2000 up to today there has been an increase from 24,000 to 52,000 foreign students. The majority is composed by Albanians (21.6%), Greeks (9.2%) and Romanians (4.5%) who prefer to attend training courses relating to the social, economics and law (33.5%), medical (20. 4%), human and artistic (19.9%) sciences. At regional level, the case of Piedmont is significant, since it has increased the number of foreign students, now 7% of all the students enrolled in its four universities, so much higher than the national average.
